I would like everyone to please have a seat in our reading center so we can begin today’s lesson on bullying.
Today, we are going to read a book titled My Secret Bully. The author of this book is Trudy Ludwig. Ms. Ludwig has written quite a few books on bullying. So if you enjoy this book you may be interested in checking out some of her other books from the library.
Our story today is about a young girl named Monica. Monica I’m guessing is about your age and she is faced with a unique situation. I believe many of us have also been in her shoes at one point or another.
Let’s find out what happens.
(Teacher reads My Secret Bully by Trudy Ludwig.) Approximately 10 minutes.
How did everyone like the book? I’m glad Monica was able to resolve her bullying issue.
How do you feel about Katie? Do you think she would be someone you would want to be friends with?
Segment #2
(Factual information/Vocab
Includes sample feedback loop)
Yesterday we talked about the effects of bullying. I think we can all agree that many people are affected by bullying, but it is important to know there is help. There are many people who are willing to help you when you are presented with a situation that is out of your control. However, today we are going to talk about some things YOU can do to protect yourself and others from bullying.
Here are some ideas:
  • Tell a trusted adult what’s happening.
Remember telling an adult about bullying is different than being a tattletale. When you tattle, you’re trying to get someone in trouble. However when you tell an adult about bullying someone is already being hurt and you are trying help the situation so it doesn’t become dangerous
  • Calmly tell the person who is bullying someone to stop.
Use self-control to calm down and manage any upset feeling you have before approaching the bully.
  • Reach out to a friend
This friend should be a positive friend and someone you can trust that will help you.
  • Walk away from the situation.
You can walk away alone or with a friend.
  • Avoid the person, location, or situation where bullying tends to happen.
Some of these solutions many seem too scary for you to handle but with a little courage and self- confidence you can accomplish a lot of results.
Bully’s like to target people who they think are weak and won’t defend themselves.
As we’ve learned today, no one is helpless against bullying. But it’s normal to feel scared and upset if you are being bullied. It can also feel scary to change our usual behavior. But by acting with courage, we can make changes to protect ourselves
  • Some people think having courage means not feeling scared. Actually, having courage means doing our best to do the right thing, even though we feel afraid.
  • We can use self-control to calm down when we’re upset and we can use positive self-talk to manage our feelings to help us develop self-confidence.
Before we move on to our activity does anyone have any questions that you haven’t already asked or anything you would like to add to our discussion.
Segment #3
(Includes multiple intelligence strategy:
Hands-on, small groups, reteaching strategy)
Boys and girls bullying is a big issue and it is happening all over the world. I don’t know about you but I would love to see an end to bullying. We have been learning so much the last couple days about bullying I think we should share what we have been learning by putting together an Anti-Bullying campaign to urge others to stop bullying.
A little action can have a big impact on the environment around us. Although we can’t make everyone change, we can start with ourselves and share with others the knowledge we have acquired about bullying. I think this information is too important to keep to ourselves.
We are going to be using a wonderful resource on the internet call glogster.com to help us create our posters. In your glogster you will be able to embed videos, pictures, and facts to your poster. When this project is complete each group will present their anti-bullying poster to our classroom. You will be given time today and tomorrow to complete this project. You will be doing your presentations on Friday.
